Orpheus and Calais ( Fanocle)

Fanocle part of the group of poets of Hellenistic Alexandria environment dedicated to the genre of elegy.
of his work there are only fragments, which make it possible for us to know the subject of at least some elegies: the fragment 1 Powell, the longest (28 lines), was part of a poem about love between Orpheus and Calais. It focuses on a double
àition: in fact the main one, which seeks to explain the custom of the Thracians to mark their women if they have another colleague, who will explain the reason for such a particular fondness for the music of the island of Lesbos .

The elegy opens with Orpheus who pines for Calais, son of Boreas, sitting in the woods of Thrace and his singing love the Thracian women, however, suddenly surround him and attack him to kill him, he can not bear to slight the women and accused him of having introduced between Traci loves men. As they tear the body and tagliatagli the head with a nail set to his lyre and thrown overboard. So the currents carry the head of Orpheus in Lesbos, and bury it Lesbi putting the pound over the mound, so the sweet music of Orpheus forever permeates the island since then suited to the arts of song and lyre. The Thracians, known the terrible crime of their women, brands, and they shall bear forever the memory of that guilt.

The poem is permeated by a widespread atmosphere of pathos, of compassion for the misery of the love of Orpheus, and the absolute injustice of his horrible end. Is clearly rebuttable, at least in this elegy, critical interpretation that saw in Fanocle a condemnation of homosexuality. Send an elegy

"O Oiagro as the son of the Thracian Orpheus loved
heart of Calais, son of Boreas,
and often sat in the shady woods
singing his love and his heart was not peace, but

Thracian threw him into the sea with a lyre
fixed with a nail, that they might be dragged from the sea
both together, glistening wet from the waves.

and sound as a pound of harmonious
